shoe mount flash question for my canon 40d – Canon Speedlite 580EX II or Canon Speedlite 430EX TTL?
I’m really broke – is the 580 worth the extra money or is the 430 really good too? I’m still learning the technical side of photography so I just don’t know, but I have to get a flash for my collage class. I’m doing mostly portraiture and fashion photography both indoors and outdoors. can someone tell me the major differences and whether pr not the 430 would be a good buy for me? thanks!
The 430EX II will be perfectly fine for your class. The majority of the features that the 580EX II offers won’t be of any concern if you expect to use just one flash. The 580EX II can be used as a master (control and fire other flashes) or a slave (controlled by master) in multi-flash setups whereas the 430EX II can only be used as a slave. You see, that kind of answers itself though. You need one flash right now, so the whole master/slave deal doesn’t really matter much. If you ever find yourself needing more than one flash, you can buy the 580EX II later and use the 430EX II as a slave. The only thing I’d be concerned about is that the 580EX II is simply a stronger flash, but you can work around that in the vast majority of situations that you’ll face. Were it my choice, I’d get the 430EX II and not over-extend my budget — don’t really see a justification in the price difference for a single unit setup.
